Dog Bite Claims

Being attacked by a dog is a hugely traumatic experience, one which can have a physical and emotional impact on the victim. All dog owners have a responsibility to protect those who come into contact with their dog. If they fail to do and you are injured in a dog attack then you may be able to make a claim.

Common victims of dog bites

Sadly children are most common victims of dog bite attacks. According to figures approximately 20% of victims who require hospital treatment after suffering a dog bite are children under the age of 9.

Adults are also at risk of being bitten by a dangerous dog, particularly those whose area of employment sees them come into regular contact with dogs including:

  • Postmen
  • Delivery/removal men
  • Care worker/nurse
  • Dog walkers.

Making a dog bite claim

When making a dog bite claim there are a number of things you can do which may help improve your chance of success:

  • Find out who is the dog’s owner and where they live
  • Identify if the dog has any history of violence
  • Report the incident to the police
  • Seek medical advice
  • Get the contact details of any eyewitnesses
  • Take photographs of the injuries.

It is also important to find out if the dog owner has pet insurance. If they don’t then we may still be able to help with your claim by applying to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).
