Common symptoms of industrial deafness

Common symptoms of industrial deafness, or tinnitus as it is more commonly known, include:

  • Having to turn your TV and radio up to a high volume
  • Constantly asking people to speak up and/or repeat themselves
  • Suffering from a persistent ringing, buzzing, whistling or hissing in your ears
  • People telling you that you are speaking loudly or even shouting.

Regardless of how long you have been working in this environment, or even if you are no longer work for that employer, they have a duty of care to provide a safe working environment. This includes providing adequate protection to minimise the impact of industrial noise (e.g. providing ear protectors).

You have up to three years to make a claim for industrial deafness. It is important to understand that, as hearing loss does not necessarily happen immediately, the clock does not start ticking until you either:

  • First notice hearing loss, or
  • Realise your hearing loss could be caused by your working environment.
